Description

Overview

We make our Raised Garden Boxes from 100% untreated, dried cedar.  We start each garden box with an external frame made from 2 inch lumber.  To create the sides, we insert 1 inch thick boards into the frame to increase stability and support against outward soil pressure.  Each board overlaps with each other to lock all pieces into place with minimal hardware.

Specifications

Unless otherwise specified, dimensions listed are the outside dimensions of the garden box.  Our Raised Boxes come in 2 different heights: 16″ and 23″.  We make them in 2, 3 and 4 foot widths and offer lengths up to 8 feet through our website.  Interested in something different?  Drop us a line on our contact page and we’ll get in touch with you about your project.

We make the corner legs of our Raised Garden Boxes with doubled-up 2″ cedar and complete the top and bottom of the frame with 2″ cedar.  We make each side with 1″ boards and embed each side into the frame on all 4 sides to reduce bowing and resist outward soil pressure while minimizing hardware.

The Raised Garden Box has an open bottom and can go directly on the ground, gravel, or garden fabric.

Set-up and Assembly

Backyard Boxes Raised Garden Boxes ship with 4-6 assembled sides.  Customers can easily attach all four sides using the provided bolts and a 7/16 socket wrench (not provided).  

Once assembled, place your Raised Garden Box on a flat, level surface and fill with soil.

Options

Our Raised Garden Boxes come without treatment or stain.  Left untreated, cedar will remain strong and hold up against the elements.  To keep your garden bed looking great as long as possible, we recommend applying a non-toxic stain or clear sealant to the outside of the box.  

We carry non-toxic sealant and stain in a wide variety of colors.  You can purchase quarts or gallons of clear sealant or color stain from us and apply it to your Garden Box.  We carry Vermont Natural Coatings clear sealants and stains.
