What should I do to Winterize my garden box?

Easily winterize your garden bed in 3 steps.  First, remove any dead plant material or weeds from the bed.  Next, add compost or amended soil, mixing the new soil or compost into the current soil.  Finally, cover your garden in a layer of leaves or mulch.  Want to take winterizing to the next level?  Read our blog on cover crops!

How do I care for my new garden box?

Cedar is naturally rot resistant so you do not need to put a sealant on it.  Your Backyard Boxes Garden Box should remain strong for years to come.  To keep it looking new, we recommend applying a non-toxic clear sealant or color stain to your garden bed every 1-2 years.

Do I need a bottom or liner for my garden box?

In most cases, no.  But there are some times you might consider it.  We recommend never lining your garden bed with plastic as doing so will trap moisture and rot the wood.

Garden fabric can be put down on the bottom to help keep weeds out, but will reduce the ability of longer root vegetables to reach deep in the soil.  Similarly, if critters are a problem, a hard bottom (with holes for drainage) can come in handy.

Do you make custom sizes?

Yes!  If you are interested in ordering a different size product than you see on the website, please email us a sales@backyardboxes.com with the dimensions you are looking for and we will be happy to provide you a quote.  Please note that custom sizes will take additional production time and may require additional shipping costs.

How much assembly do I need to do?

For customers selecting the Local Delivery option (Denver Metro Area Only), products will be delivered fully assembled or assembled by a member of our team at the time of delivery.

For all shipping or in-store pickup customers, very little assembly is required.  Our boxes ship partially assembled and you can finish assembly in a few minutes.  The only tool required is a 7/16″ socket wrench (or you can use a drill).
